PSMA speaks for the sugar mills of Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa — maintaining the industry’s production and stock data, engaging with policy makers, and pursuing the research that raises sugarcane yield and recovery.

What we do
Four decades of work, in four parts
The association was created to promote the development and efficiency of the sugar mills, within the parameters of government policy. That mandate breaks down into the work below.
Industry data
The association maintains production, sale and stock information for the whole industry, and forecasts yearly production and consumption for millers and policy makers alike.
Research & development
PSMA pursues improvement in sugarcane yield and recovery, irrigation efficiency and the adoption of new technologies in the farming system — including the case for a dedicated sugarcane breeding institution.
Member services
A central secretariat in Islamabad and zonal secretariats in the north and south serve the member mills directly, from the telephone directory to the annual general meeting.
Since 1964
A memorandum signed by eight mills
PSMA’s memorandum was signed in 1964 by four mills in East Pakistan and four in West Pakistan — Premier, Kohinoor, Habib and Crescent. The first meeting of the industry’s representatives took place on 30 August 1964 in Lahore; the first Annual General Meeting followed in March 1965.
- Zones created in 1971 After the re-organisation of provinces, the Sindh, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa zones were established by resolution in September 1971.
- Re-licensed in 2008 Following the Trade Organizations Ordinance of 2007, PSMA applied afresh and was granted its new licence on 17 May 2008.
- Data that outlives a season Production and stock records, annual reviews and statistical series are kept and published so the industry has a long memory.

Structure
Three zones, one association
Each sugar-producing province has its own zonal committee and secretariat, coordinating with the central secretariat in Islamabad.
Punjab Zone
The largest concentration of mills, from Okara and Kasur through to Rahim Yar Khan.
