What a GSP is bred to do

The German Shorthaired Pointer is a versatile gun dog, meaning one dog expected to find and point upland birds, retrieve on land and water, and track wounded game. That range is the reason the breed dominates American upland hunting.

They are high-drive dogs. A GSP that does not get worked will find its own work, and that is usually something you did not want.

What to ask a GSP seller

• How many wild bird contacts has the dog had, and on what species?
• Is it steady to wing and shot, or is it still chasing?
• Has it been introduced to water, and does it retrieve to hand?
• What are the hip and elbow results for both parents?
