PSMA is the industry’s counterpart to federal and provincial government on cane pricing, support prices, distribution controls, cess rules and the ordinances that regulate manufacture and trade.

What the association does
PSMA maintains the industry’s data, represents its members to government, and pursues the research that raises sugarcane yield and recovery.
Mandate
Promoting development and efficiency
The association was established with objectives set out in its Memorandum of Association. In practice that mandate resolves into five areas of continuous work.
Statistics & forecasting
The association provides and maintains data on production, sale and stock, and forecasts yearly production and consumption. The information is studied at both the domestic and international level.
Research & development
Long-term targets include improving sugarcane yield and recovery, raising irrigation efficiency, and adopting new technologies in the farming system. PSMA also pursues the case for a national sugarcane breeding institution.
Member services
The central secretariat and the two zonal secretariats serve member mills directly — membership records, the telephone directory, circulars, and the annual general meeting at which office bearers are elected.
Record & publication
Annual reviews, statistical series, mill listings and the photographic archive are published rather than filed away, so the industry keeps a long institutional memory.
Policy position
A comprehensive policy is the prerequisite
Pursuance of a comprehensive policy is the prerequisite for the success of an industrial sub-sector. Policy must cover production and price, and through them achieve market stability — creating a sustainable situation by consolidation and giving a steady upturn.
Considering population growth and the rise in per-capita use, consumption has reached the maximum production the industry could produce in its best harvest. All effort is therefore directed at increasing production through the development of better varieties with higher yield and recovery.

Common questions
Working with PSMA
Membership is open to sugar mills operating in Pakistan. The association was
established as the representative organisation of all sugar mills in the country
and operates under the Trade Organizations Act. Contact the central secretariat
for the current admission requirements.
Published series are available under Statistics,
covering national and international data. For figures not published here, write to
the secretariat at secretary@psmacentre.com.
The principal instruments — from the Sugarcane Act of 1934 through the control
orders, cess rules and the Trade Organisations Acts — are collected under

The Sindh, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa zones were created by resolution in
September 1971, following the re-organisation of provinces. Each has its own
committee; see Zonal committees.
